We asked Jonathan to interpret this year's five Best Film nominees for the covers of our Film Awards brochures. The brochures are given to all attendees on the night and form a collectable set.

Jonathan Burton: Conceptual Commentary

I wanted to capture a ‘narrative moment’ within the films without copying a direct scene. The first stage was noting down the key moments and then creating a new angle, while trying to incorporate the themes of the story. This was a way to stay loyal to the characters and settings but show a broader picture that represents the whole.

As inspiration I’m drawn to photographs that leave the subjects’ identities a mystery. It seemed appropriate for these illustrations to show the characters within their settings from behind or above, which allows us to ‘see’ what they are seeing.

Tickets:

Jonathan was also asked to design the tickets for guests to the Film Awards using the BAFTA mask and ceremony as his inspiration.

"The Iranian children putting the shredded paper back together like a puzzle was such a strong image that I had to use that as my inspiration. It’s central to the film’s theme of the hunt for the six escaped hostages. Look closely and there are other faces within the shreds too."

"The heart of the film for me was Fantine’s song and after sketching many ideas it was that powerful performance that kept coming back to me. I thought it would be interesting to do a character study of Fantine and even though we can’t see her face, I hope we can sense her fragility and vulnerability."

The film plays with the themes of storytelling and metaphor, so I liked the idea of looking into a slightly distorted reflection, as if it’s Pi’s imagination. We see the night sky and at the same time the deep sea, hinting at the hallucinogenic and dreamlike moments in the film.

Lincoln's image has been so broadly exposed that all we need to see is the long coat and the hat to reveal his character. I wanted to show him as the leader of men and well respected by the black soldiers that he is fighting for and defending. The film doesn’t show much of the battlefield, but I felt it important to include the people whose lives are at stake throughout the political disputes.

I really wanted to include the character of Maya in the illustration, particularly with her arms folded as she does so much in the film. She’s strong and resolute, but also vulnerable under the overpowering weight of the CIA and the subsequent military action to find bin Laden. I loved how the stealth helicopters were filmed, completely disappearing into the blackness of the night sky and swirls of dust.
