6th London Short Film Festival - Kris Marshall Retrospective + Interview

Fri 16 Jan 20:00

"If you look at the list of directors who have started in short films - Ridley Scott, Stephen Daldry and others, it is clear that shorts underpin the film industry in this country, and have always been the place to look for groundbreaking talent. I love being involved in them" Kris Marshall
<img src="https://static.bafta.org/images/originals/marshall-kris-for-web-2717.jpg" align="right" width="200"

More recently spotted in features such as Love Actually and Easy Virtue, many people will have first encountered Kris Marshall as Belmondo, the louche wannabe anti-hero in Toby MacDonald's affectionate homage to Nouvelle Vague cinema, the BAFTA-winning in BAFTA-winning short Je t'aime John Wayne.

Yet even those who haven't seen his shorts or features will be familiar with Marshall's comedic talents through his sweetly funny BT ads about a single Mum and her new boyfriend.

Join us for this review of his work in short films followed by an onstage conversation with Marshall to discover his influences, ideal collaborators and the filmmakers he admires.

BAFTA: A Life in Pictures - Meryl Streep in association with Radio Times

Sat 17 Jan 18:30

18:30 | Champagne reception
19:00 | Event begins

Join us for the Academy's celebration of the life in pictures of iconic actress Meryl Streep. The multi BAFTA-winning actress will take centre stage at BAFTA to discuss her extraordinary career.

Streep has portrayed an astonishing and diverse array of roles in a career that has cut its own unique path from the theatre, through film and television. Memorable roles include The Deer Hunter, Kramer V. Kramer, Sophie's Choice and Out of Africa to name but a few.

Most recently, she starred in the box office smash Mamma Mia!, a film adaptation of the hit Broadway musical based on the songs of ABBA. She will next appear in the film adaptation of John Patrick Shanley's Doubt opposite Philip Seymour Hoffman and Amy Adams and in Nora Ephron's Julie & Julia as the famed master chef, Julia Childs.

This is a rare opportunity to hear first-hand from the icon herself and ask questions about her remarkable career.

The Academy's A Life in Pictures events celebrate the art of film, exploring a major and distinctive contribution to the artistic development of the form by a BAFTA winner or nominee. This very special strand enables an audience to hear first-hand from a creative force in the industry. Previous subjects have included Anthony Minghella, Cate Blanchett, Tilda Swinton, The Coen Brothers, Alfonso Cuarón and many more.

How can the Nations and Regions get some of the action?

Called "Strictly Entertainment London" and sponsored jointly by BAFTA, BAFTA Scotland and BAFTA Cymru, the session will explore the positives and negatives of producing popular entertainment shows outside of London and question why so many popular shows have moved from the regions to London. Can anything be done to halt the trend?

In a critical year for television, the Nations and Regions Conference is the only national event to focus on the industry outside London. A raft of top names head the line-up with an opening speech by the Rt. Hon. Andy Burnham MP, Secretary of State for Culture, Media and Sport.

Pricing information
The Nations and Regions Conference runs from 5.30pm on Monday 19 January until the evening of Tuesday 20 January.
