Cast: Gemma Arterton, Dominic Cooper, Tamsin Grieg, Roger Allam

A bright and amusing comedy about the fibles and loves of writers in the West Country, inspired by Posy Simmonds' comic strip (itself, loosely based on Thomas Hardy's Far from the Madding Crowd.) Gemma Arterton plays Tamara Drewe, an ugly duckling who ruffles the feathers of a handful of suitors after retunring home a sexy swan. The depiction of the Dorset countryside is ravishing enough to please Hardy himself.

Screenwriters' Lecture Series: Sir David Hare

Thu 09 Sep 18:30

Some of the biggest names in screenwriting step into the spotlight, discussing their art and what inspires them in this unique series of talks.

Film Committee member, Jeremy Brock who programmed this series of events with the BAFTA team explains the background to the series:

'Name a famous film director. Now name a famous screenwriter. Not so easy.

The truth is, no great film can exist without a great screenplay, yet screenwriters remain in the shadows - seen, all too often, as adjuncts to the director's vision, rather than authors in their own right. We wanted to correct this misconception by inviting some of the industry's top screenwriters to talk about their art and what inspires them.

In what we hope will become an annual event, these talks allow each speaker to dictate the content and structure of the event, for their 'voice' to emerge'.Jeremy Brock

David Hare has a reputation for elegant and highly intelligent screenplays which inspire extraordinary performances from actors. For The Reader and The Hours, he was nominated for BAFTA, Golden Globe and Oscar-awards. He won a BAFTA for his 1979 TV Play Licking Hitler
