Me and My Movie

CBBC, BBC Learning and BAFTA have partnered to run CBBC me and my movie, a young filmmakers competition for 7-14 year olds.

The competition was launched on Blue Peter in April with four regional workshops in Cardiff, Edinburgh, London and Manchester.

Twelve children were selected to enter the Blue Peter “Movie Mansion” for two weeks at Pinewood Studios where they learnt the skills of filmmaking, overseen by Mansion Guru, Duncan Kenworthy. Blue Peter viewers also honed their skills by watching onscreen master classes and film location reports.

The national competition was in full swing over the summer with the CBBC me and my movie summer roadshow, workshops at BBC Open Learning Centres around the country and a dedicated website, www.bbc.co.uk/cbbc/meandmymovie which has generated a lively social network with children swapping ideas for stories and filmmaking techniques.

The competition closed at the end of September and, after a stringent round of judging by industry experts, four films were nominated. The winner was announced at the British Academy Children's Awards in association with Electronic Arts on Sunday 25 November.

• WINNER: "The Unwelcome Stranger" (Rosalind, 14 from Norfolk) - a powerful drama showing how one girl comes to terms with her parents' separation.
• "Race Against Time" (Patrick, 14 London) - an amusing tale with clever special effects telling the story of a boy who cycles back to a Lego-inspired Rome
• "Go Practise" (Oliver, 12 from Inverness) - a heart-warming animation showing how a cello-playing boy gets support for his musical endeavours from the most unusual of places
• "Neighboorhood Watch" (Adam, 10 from Nottingham) - a thought-provoking story of a boy who spots a mysterious stranger lurking outside his house

The winner was decided by a “Super Jury” of film producers, writers including Stormbreaker’s Anthony Horowitz and young acting talent, Anna Popplewell, from The Chronicles of Narnia, Blue Peter presenter Andy Akinwolere and Newsround's Ellie Criswell.

The nominated children attended the Children’s Awards and the winner Rosalind was presented with a specially commissioned trophy.

The 4 nominated films were also shown at the opening gala of the London Children’s Film Festival at the Barbican (17th November), on BBC big screens across England, and the results were featured on Blue Peter on 27 November.
