Stephen Frears was honored with the John Schlesinger Britannia Award for Artistic Excellence in Directing, and Don Cheadle was this year’s recipient of the BAFTA/LA Humanitarian Award Presented by Volvo.

The recipient of this year’s Stanley Kubrick Britannia Award for Excellence in Film was the BAFTA-nominated actor and director Sean Penn.

"As a celebrated actor, director and producer, Sean has become a film icon over the past three decades," says BAFTA/LA Chairman Peter Morris. "The roles and subject matter he chooses to tackle as a filmmaker are both challenging and inspiring to audiences worldwide."

The list of Award presenters included Annette Bening, Jack Black and Hugh Laurie at a star-studded evening at the Hyatt Regency Century Plaza Hotel in Los Angeles. British-born singer and guitarist Gavin Rossdale performed.

The Britannia Award is BAFTA/LA's highest accolade, a celebration of achievement honouring individuals and companies who have dedicated their careers or corporate missions to advancing the entertainment arts. The Awards are presented annually at a gala dinner, where peers and colleagues celebrate the work and accomplishments of the distinguished honourees.
