The Academy's “Life in Pictures” event celebrated the achievements of BAFTA-winning actress Tilda Swinton.
Supported by The Farm Group.
Tilda Swinton's career is as diverse and enigmatic as her film roles. Her mentor and director Derek Jarman fuelled her appetite for playing stimulating characters in Caravaggio (1986), Aria (1987), The Last of England (1988) and Wittgenstein (1993).
Since her award-winning performance in Sally Potter's Orlando (1992), Swinton has also appeared in The Beach, Young Adam, Adaptation, Broken Flowers and The Lion, The Witch And The Wardrobe as the White Witch. Most recently, she won a Supporting Actress BAFTA for her role in Michael Clayton at the Orange British Academy Film Awards in 2008.
To celebrate this remarkable career and to recognize her contribution to the world of film the Academy hosted a Life in Pictures event on Tuesday 27 November.
Proceeded by a champagne reception the event saw Tilda Swinton interviewed on stage by Nick James, editor of Sight and Sound magazine. As Nick and Tilda discussed her varied career – from her early roles with Derek Jarman to her current work in America – clips were played illustrating her roles in films such as Caravaggio, Orlando, The Deep End, Stephanie Daley and Michael Clayton. The actress then answered a range of questions from the audience.
A Life in Pictures
The event was part of the Academy's A Life in Pictures strand of events, celebrating the art of film, exploring a major and distinctive contribution to the artistic development of the film form. This very special strand enables an audience to hear first-hand from a creative force in the industry.
"Electric interview. Thank you. You may want to cut the black video and replay at the end (after about min 23). Some people are trying to watch this on the Mozambique internet!"

"What a nice, honest, funny and decent person! I've seen several films with Tilda, like Orlando, Caravaggio, The deep End, Tekknolust, Female Perversions, The Beach, Possible Worlds and so on, but, believe it or not, most beautiful and really deeply impressing I find her as Ella in Young Adam. Ella would make me completely mad, so demure, extreme sensitiv, ruthless and pragmatical and lonely. Well done! I hope, Tilda will read this maybe once ;o). Love greets!"
