Youth Board

The BAFTA Youth Board was created to inform policy around the needs of today’s career-starters in the Film, Television and Games industries. Its members meet to discuss BAFTA’s Learning & Events programme, Communications and Awards Ceremonies and their relevance for young people in today’s competitive jobs market. They serve a term of one year and meet three times a year, feeding their thoughts and suggestions into BAFTA’s Board and Committees.

Biographies

Jonathan Ash

I am a freelance film producer specialising in comedy and comedy-drama having graduated from the Royal Welsh College of Music & Drama in 2010. My previous credits include webseries The Splott Division (as featured in The Guardian and on S4C, BBC Radio Wales), short film Mind Games (Winner of the IdeasTap Innovators Award) and Sink or Spin at the Edinburgh Fringe (Critic’s Choice – Fringe Guru; as featured on BBC Culture Show & Scott Mills Radio 1 Show). I am currently working on my first feature film alongside various short film projects. I’m also an Associate Artist of the National Youth Theatre.

Faye Ellis

I work at the British Museum as Digital Learning Programmes Manager, running a programme of workshops for young people, which include filmmaking and animation. Previously I’ve worked as Head of ICT in a school and completed a work placement at the BBC. I’m doing an MA in Media, Culture and Communication, and I have a PGCE and a degree in New Media. I’m particularly interested in children’s television and online media, and I’m hugely excited to be involved in what BAFTA is doing for young people. I’m also interested in design, and I’m making a magazine called Fingers&Thumbs in my spare time. I’m from the North, but live in London.

James Goldburn

I am currently in my final year studying Politics with Economics year at Loughborough University, where it was through joining Loughborough Students’ Media that I developed an interest in television production. I am currently Assistant Head of Media of Loughborough Students’ Media and former Station Manager of its TV section, LSUTV. I have since been elected as Returning Officer for the National Student Television Association and sit on the Board of Trustees at Loughborough Students’ Union.

Rebecca Graffy

I am the youngest on the BAFTA Youth Board having just turned 18 in October. I am currently studying Chemistry, History and Psychology at A-level, My plan for the future is to go to university and gain all the skills I need to make it in the film industry but I’m not entirely sure which part of film (although I have always wanted and liked the idea of being a director). I have always had a keen interest in film and went this year to the British Youth Film Academy (BYFA) Summer Camp, which confirmed this passion and my career choice.

Jacob Harbord

I love documentaries and, when I’m not making them, I’m watching them and reading about them. In 2011 I graduated with a 1st in Anthropology from UCL and am currently doing the MA in Visual Anthropology with Ethnographic Film at Manchester University. I aim to carve out a career in documentary production and/or distribution and hope to engage more young people in the genre through my position on the BAFTA Youth Board. I’m a huge fan of both Werner Herzog (my favourite film being Little Dieter Needs To Fly) and Marc Isaacs (particularly for The Lift).

Anna Hoghton

I’m twenty years old and currently studying English with Creative Writing at Nottingham University. I’ve always written short stories and bits of script, writing with the Bristol Old Vic Young Company. My interest in film-making started when I wrote a short film with the Bristol Watershed which received funding from the Arts Council. The film won an award at the Encounters first young people’s film festival in 2011 and has since been shown in festivals in London and Norway. I have also participated in a six-month internship with the BBC Bristol. Both experiences have really excited a passion for writing for film and media in me.

Daniel Kaluuya

My first break came in the original Skins for E4. I joined the cast as Posh Kenneth and as a staff writer, and by series 2 I became the youngest ever lead writer on an episode of a UK TV series. Other television credits include The Fades (BBC3), Psychoville (BBC2), Doctor Who (BBC1) and Black Mirror (C4) and recent film releases include Johnny English Reborn, as Rowan Atkinson's sidekick Agent Tucker, and Chatroom. My performance in Roy Williams' Sucker Punch at The Royal Court earned me both an Evening Standard Award and Critics' Circle Theatre Award for Outstanding Newcomer.

Calum King

I'm currently working at Sky 1 and Sky Atlantic, after arriving as an intern and refusing to leave. Before that, I studied philosophy at Lancaster University, and before that, I did some A Levels. Before that, I spent several years at school, and before that, I was born. In my spare time I like to write, whether it's embarrassingly bad screenplays, scripts for TV and rambling blogs about the state of modern cinema and my own awkward experiences. I occasionally play the drums (badly).

Rajiv Nathwani

I'm an Assistant Producer in the multiplatform team at BBC EastEnders where I deliver interactive, Red Button and online drama content for EastEnders and its online and BBC Three spin-off show EastEnders: E20. Outside of my role at the BBC, I'm a co-founder of Theatre Ninjas, an iPhone app and website which offers free and discounted last-minute tickets to shows at the Edinburgh Fringe Festival. I am also a Director and Trustee of the Birmingham Repertory Theatre.

Luke Powney

I’m currently studying Game Design and Production Management at the University of Abertay, Dundee. It represents a life time of passion of video games. From the age of seven, I’ve always known that I wanted to be involved in the industry. My ambition is to become a producer for a game development studio. I’ve had experience at several Marketing firms in London, and a team based environment is something I thrive on. Becoming a member of the BAFTA Youth Board is an absolute privilege and is the next step to enable me to work within a team. Additionally, I’m the world’s biggest Harry Potter fan.

Lewie Procter

I'm the founder and Managing Director of SavyGamer.co.uk - the UK's leading videogame deals site. I initially started the site as a side project during the first year of my business degree, but once the site became a success, I left university to pursue it full time, and then used it as a springboard for my games journalism career. Having previously written for the likes of Rock Paper Shotgun, VG247 and Eurogamer, I recently took a part time position blogging for IndieGames.com, and was also invited to judge for the IGFs this year. Adrian Scanlon

I have been making films for just over five years and have produced videos for various people since graduating from university. I am a person of late bedtimes having discovered that there are really quite a lot of films out there to watch; even on nights when I have to turn in early I’d select a movie to bore me to sleep...Hollywood films usually do a good job of that. I’m a fairly mainstream guy: I’ve yet to dye my hair or dress myself in mismatching patterns but in film, I get angry at conventions and predictability. When I go to the cinema I want to learn, not revise.

Claire Stratton

Even though I studied History, I always knew that I wanted to work in TV. Volunteering at Sheffield Doc/Fest for a number of years and working at the MediaGuardian Edinburgh International Television Festival during my time at university only served to strengthen my desire to pursue a career in this exciting industry. After graduating in July 2011, I went on to work for BBC One's ‘The One Show’ as a Runner and then Green Lions Films as a Production Assistant. As of November 2011 I have been working for Studio Lambert in the Development team.

Sandra Townsend

I am a TV addict/Science graduate but I have always been interested in telling stories. Writing for Eastenders: E20, Series 3 was great fun. It was a bit surreal to be part of a show I had grown up watching on TV. I am currently working on a series of online science videos and I occasionally read scripts for BBC: Casualty. I’m also co-writing a play for BBC Radio drama and have had a short play reading at the Soho Theatre.

Tom Webb

Working in youth led media initiatives for the past five years has taken me all around the world; from seminars in Sweden to tweeting in Taiwan I’ve been promoting the importance of the youth voice in mainstream media as the UK youth media ambassador. After my first spell working for BBC3 I have since worked for the UK’s biggest TV channels including ITV and Sky from the studio floor, stadium stage and press department. With films as my biggest passion, I’ve recently been working for the UK’s biggest film distributor Entertainment Film.
